How to Care for Crochet Flowers, Toys and Bags
Handmade crochet pieces can last for years with a little care. Here's how to keep your flowers, toys, bags and décor looking their best.
Crochet flowers and bouquets
- Dust regularly. Use a soft makeup brush, or a hair dryer on the cool setting held at a distance.
- Avoid strong direct sunlight. Bright sun over long periods can fade colours.
- Keep them dry. Flowers with wire stems shouldn't be soaked, as the wire can rust.
- Reshape gently. If petals get squashed in transit, shape them back with your fingers.
Soft toys and amigurumi
- Spot clean small marks with a damp cloth and mild soap.
- For a full wash, hand wash in cold water with a gentle detergent. Don't wring — press the water out with a towel.
- Dry flat in the shade and reshape while damp.
Bags, pouches and accessories
- Hand wash in cold water and dry flat — hanging a wet bag can stretch it.
- Don't overload crochet bags with heavy items to help them keep their shape.
- Store stuffed with tissue paper so they hold their form.
Coasters, mats and décor
- Coasters and mats can be hand washed and dried flat.
- Wall hangings and baskets just need occasional dusting.
Storage
Store crochet items in a cool, dry place, in a cotton bag or box rather than plastic, so the yarn can breathe. Keep them away from damp areas.
