How to Crochet a Sunflower: Easy Tutorial for Beginners

What you need

• Brown yarn for the centre and yellow yarn for the petals (acrylic or milk cotton)
• A crochet hook to suit your yarn
• Scissors and a yarn needle
• Optional: green yarn for leaves, a key ring or hair clip

Step by step

1. With brown yarn, make a magic ring and work 6 single crochet into it. Pull the ring tight.
2. Round 2: work 2 single crochet into every stitch (12 stitches).
3. Round 3: *1 single crochet, then 2 single crochet in the next stitch* all round (18 stitches). Add another increase round for a bigger centre.
4. Change to yellow yarn and join with a slip stitch.
5. Make the petals: chain a few stitches, work back down the chain with taller stitches (half double or double crochet), then slip stitch into the next centre stitch. Repeat all round.
6. Fasten off and weave in the ends at the back.
7. Optional: add green leaves or a backing circle, then sew on a key ring, hair clip or stem.

• Increase evenly in each round so the centre lies flat.
