How to Crochet a Rose Leaf (Leaves for Rose Flowers)

What you need

• Green yarn, in one or two shades
• A crochet hook to suit your yarn
• Scissors and a yarn needle
• A finished crochet rose (see the rose keychain tutorial)

Step by step

1. Star base: with green yarn, make a magic ring and work a round of single crochet into it (about 10 stitches). Pull it tight and join with a slip stitch.
2. Make a point: chain 5, then work back down the chain with a slip stitch, a single crochet, a half double crochet and a double crochet, and slip stitch into the next 2 stitches of the ring.
3. Repeat all round for five points, then fasten off, leaving a long tail.
4. Sew the star under the rose with the tail so the points show between the petals.
5. Single leaf: chain 8 to 10. Working back along the chain, make a single crochet, a half double, a few double crochet, a half double and a single crochet, with 3 stitches in the last chain to turn round the tip.
6. Work the same stitches in reverse along the other side of the chain, then slip stitch to the start.
7. For a stem of leaves, make a long chain, add leaves along it on both sides, and slip stitch back down the chain.

Tips

• Use the same yarn weight as the rose so the leaves are in proportion.
• Steam or press the leaves lightly so they lie flat.
