Amigurumi is a Japanese word that combines ami, meaning crocheted or knitted, and nuigurumi, meaning stuffed doll. So amigurumi simply means small crocheted or knitted stuffed toys. Today the word is used worldwide for crochet animals, dolls, characters and even food with cute faces.
How is an amigurumi toy made?
Most amigurumi are crocheted by hand in a continuous spiral, using tight single crochet stitches so the stuffing doesn't show through. Each part (head, body, arms, legs and ears) is usually made separately, stuffed, and then sewn together. Faces are finished with embroidered details or safety eyes.
