The written steps are a quick guide to the method. Anjali's exact stitch counts and colours are in the video.

What you need

  • Cotton yarn in two colours
  • A crochet hook to suit your yarn
  • A yarn needle and scissors
  • The thali or plate you want to cover, to check the size

Step by step

  1. Make a magic ring and work the first round of double crochet into it. Join with a slip stitch.
  2. Increase evenly on every round so the circle stays flat (for example 12, then 24, then 36 stitches).
  3. Change colours as shown in the video to make the rings or spiral pattern.
  4. Keep going until the circle is the size of your thali.
  5. Border: work puff stitches or shells evenly all round the edge.
  6. Fasten off, weave in the ends and press the thalposh flat.

Tips

  • If the circle starts to ruffle you are increasing too much; if it cups up, increase a little more.
  • Cotton yarn holds its shape and washes well, so it suits a thalposh that will be used often.
