How to Crochet a Lily Flower

What you need

• Pink or red yarn for the petals
• Yellow or orange yarn for the stamens
• Green yarn for the stem and leaves
• A crochet hook, a yarn needle and scissors
• Stem wire

Step by step

1. Petal: make a chain, then work back along it with stitches that get taller towards the middle and shorter again at the end, so the petal comes to a point.
2. Work round the other side of the chain the same way to finish the petal. Make five or six petals.
3. Stamens: chain short lengths of yellow or orange yarn and slip stitch back along each one.
4. Gather the stamens in the middle and sew the petals round them at the base, overlapping slightly.
5. Wrap a stem wire in green yarn, crochet a long leaf or two, and attach the flower and leaves to the stem.
6. Make several lilies and group them for a bouquet or a vase.

Tips

• Thin wire worked into the petal edges lets you bend the petals into shape.
• Odd numbers of stems (three, five or seven) usually look best in a bunch.
